The University of Nicosia presents the Sports Tourism Conference on 21 February 2018, Filoxenia Conference Centre.
For decades, sports have been one of the most prominent social phenomena, with political, economic, cultural and other implications. At the same time, tourism remains the world's largest industry - with more than a billion tourists and multi-billion annual investments - and continues to grow. In this context, it’s not surprising that sports and tourism are so interlinked. As both sectors continue to connect on so many different levels, they become more profitable and gain more cultural influence. Large sporting events are organized in many countries around the world and they often aim to attract tourists, thus, generating additional income for their country.
The "Sports Tourism Conference" will be held on Wednesday, 21 February 2018, between 8:30 and 15:30, at the Filoxenia Conference Centre in Nicosia.
The conference aims to highlight the importance of the tourism industry through successful case studies and, above all, to show Cyprus as a top destination for athletic tourism throughout the year.
The "Sports Tourism Conference" will focus among others on case studies such as:
· The development of Catalonia & Barcelona as a Global Sports Destination which will be analysed by Jordi Secall, Marketing Director, Catalan Tourist Board, Spain. This case study will focus on the attempts of Catalonia and Barcelona to develop a common strategy in order to position the region as an attractive destination for the practice of sport and the city as a great place for sporting events. They both benefit from FC Barcelona as a global sports brand.
· Panagiotis Dimakos, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of Athens Marathon: The Authentic and member of the Board European Athletics Federation, Greece will be focusing on the second topic “Athens Marathon: The Authentic”. In this topic the Speaker will analyze how the Authentic Marathon of Athens became the biggest Athletic event in Greece, its identity, its history, its development, its impact on society, economy, health and the local market, as well as the dominant role of the Federation SEGAS and the strategies implemented for its success.
