Schoolchildren and groups around the island held parades on Sunday to mark the moment in WWII that the Greeks stood up to opposing forces, a national holiday in both countries.
A church service to mark the date was held at 10am at the Ayios Ioannis cathedral in Nicosia attended by President Nicos Anastasiades and Greek ambassador Ilias Fotopoulos. The service was officiated by Bishop Goergios of Paphos as the Archbishop is still recovering from surgery last week.
At 11am the president and Greek ambassador took the salute outside the Greek embassy of participants in a parade by school children from around Nicosia, volunteer associations and scouting movements.
Similar parades were held around the island.
