The western seafront between the old and new Limassol port, to the south of Franklin Roosevelt Avenue will soon receive a makeover.
The area, known as Karnagio, has over the years fallen into disrepair, as various industrial units have been abandoned.
This image is not to the liking of the Limassol Municipality, which aims to revitalise the area through a comprehensive longterm development plan that includes residential, commercial and tourist upgrades.
The plans seek to develop the Karnagio area, connecting it to the Limassol marina and the old port, along with the urban centre of Limassol.
The reconstruction of the Aktea Avenue, connecting the seaside avenue between the old and new port is considered to be of crucial importance for the upgrade of the wider area. Aktea Avenue is set to become a green area with a linear sidewalk, a bicycle path and walkways for pedestrians.
In addition, the construction of a seaside multifunctional town square is planned, which will stretch across the seafront from the new port until the Limassol marina. This linear town square will serve as a walkway for pedestrians, a play area for children, and a multi-purpose area for events and other activities.
The plans also aim to bridge the gap between the Ayios Antonios church and the muslim mosque in the area by building a town square.
The planners also suggest that the public space to the north of Karnagio be turned into a multi-purpose activity park, and the space near the ETKO wine factory turned into a sports activity park.
