Larnaca staying active with free events in August

August 19, 2017

Whilst many locals choose to disappear in August to enjoy their summer holidays out of the town, those staying put can still enjoy a variety of free sporting and cultural events taking place in the Larnaca region for the rest of this month.

Beach volleyball tournament

The ‘International Police Association – Larnaca Region’ branch is organising the ‘4th I.P.A Larnaca Region Beach Volley Mania’ tournament, open to all.

The tournament – being held under the aegis of Larnaca Municipality – will take place tomorrow, 9am at Phinikoudes Beach, at the designated sand sports court at the start of the promenade, which has seating stands for spectators.

Teams of three will be playing – comprised of both members of the association, and members of the public who registered to participate. Prizes will be given to the first two, overall ranking teams, as well as to the first team made up of the association’s members.

Lefkara Summer Festival

The 37th Lefkara Summer Festival – held in Larnaca’s most famous mountainous village – is an event that focuses on Lefkara’s traditions, from pastimes and customs, to folkloric entertainment.

In particular, the event showcases the village’s famous, handmade lace embroidery (Lefkaritika), and silverwork craft, and also offers a programme of music and dance.

The last event of the festival will take place tomorrow with traditional music and dance at 8.30pm at Kato Lefkara main car park. Visitors can tour the village and see its crafts prior to the entertainment.

Simultaneous chess

A simultaneous chess exhibition will take place at Europe Square (start of Phinikoudes) on August 24, from 7-10pm.

Organised by the Larnaca Chess Club (part of the Cyprus Chess Federation), in cooperation with Larnaca Municipality, the event will see the Pancyprian Chess Champion, Antonis Antoniou, play 30 games of chess simultaneously.

The children’s event will take place at the village’s Pavement Square at 7.30pm, with free popcorn and juice.

In addition to the puppet show, there will also be parallel activities, including a figure building workshop, exhibition and cloth painting.
