Festive fayres continue into December

Welcome to Markets Mark II, where we bring you the low-down on the island’s many Christmas bazaars. Last week we looked at the first tranche, all taking place in November; this week we’re moving on into December where there seems to be no let-up to the handmade folly of the jolly holiday season! If you had a mind, you could visit all of this week’s fairs and stock up on enough seasonal craftiness to make Martha Stewart red, white, and green with envy.

DECEMBER 1: LIMASSOL

This one’s been in operation for a few years now, and it is – by all accounts – pretty good. Taking place at the Old Port in Limassol, this “most magical Christmas Wonderland” is hosted by All For a Good Cause which does just what it says on the tin, so you know you’re helping while buying. Running for over a month from December 1 to January 6, and open from 11am to 10pm at the weekends and from 4pm to 10pm on weekdays, this one is more of a fair than a market. There are still oodles of stalls selling the usual mix of Glühwein, hot chocolate and sweets, but the main attraction is clearly the rides: the carousel, horse carriage rides, and the ‘bumping cars’. Apparently there’s also a ‘real animal nativity scene’ and a ‘Santa Claus Grotto’, along with various workshops and something called ‘Snow Games’, so it’s really all about the kids. If they’ve been nice, shell out the €1 per ride; naughty, and it’s a hot chocolate at most.
