A new report from the World Travel & Tourism Council(WTTC), puts Cyprus among four of the world’s hottest travel destinations.
Mexico, Iceland, Azerbaijan and Cyprus all experienced a surge in tourism spending in 2016 according to the report.
Mexico’s surge saw foreign visitors spending 24% more in Pesos last year, according to the WTTC.
As for Iceland, tourism spending in the local currency surged by 27.5% last year.
Azerbaijan saw local currency spending by foreign tourists soar by nearly 71%. Like in Mexico, a much weaker currency has boosted the industry.
Meanwhile, Cyprus saw tourist spending jump by 17% last year to nearly €2.6 billion.
According to CNN, which hosted the report’s findings: “Tourists flocked to the island nation because they consider it to be a relative safe haven compared to other European destinations that have experienced a slew of high-profile terrorist attacks.”
CNN cites the report, saying that tourism spending in France declined by just over 7% last year following a string of attacks, illustrating the effect safety has on tourism.
