Ayia Napa set for DJ Royalty

Popular UK music artist and DJ, Craig David, is returning to Ayia Napa to play his TS5 set live on Makronissos Beach on Monday as part of the BCL Music Festival, Summer 2017 line-up (Beach Cult Live).

BCL have secured chart topper David for a series of open-air beach sets on June 19, July 17 and August 14, as part of the programme of big name DJs playing at the festival on a weekly basis until August.

The other celebrity DJs in the line-up are Chase & Status (UK) with MC Rage (USA) on June 26, July 24 and August 7, whilst Sigala (UK) will play on July 10. Jax Jones (UK) will also perform.

Carving a reputation for premium events

BCL was originally set up as a one-off event in 2011 by Ayia Napa resident Mario Costaki.

With over 15 years experience in the nightlife business across the island, Costaki says he wanted to elevate the standard of entertainment offered in Ayia Napa during a lull period for the resort.

“At the time, weekend festivals had started to become a trend on the island, and holding the first event in Ayia Napa was designed to help the resort stay competitive against other similar destinations that were becoming more popular.”

Thanks to a number of key people working together as a team, Costaki says that they were able to pull the first event off by successfully bringing American rapping sensation Flo Rida to Cyprus.

The artist’s breakout single ‘Low’ (2008) was number one in the United States charts for 10 weeks, breaking the record for digital download sales at the time of its release, making his performance a scoop for the resort.

But it was not an easy task, as Costaki explains: “The team we have are really great at what they do and have managed to make BCL successful, but it was really hard in the beginning.”

Costaki says that, at the time, Ayia Napa had gained a bad rep amongst artists in Europe during the garage years, and no one wanted to perform there.
“Flo Rida was on tour in Europe for his new album, so he agreed to do the show. He loved Ayia Napa so much that he stayed for three days, touring the resort. The show was a success, and no one has refused to perform since then!”

From there, the success of the BCL festival continued, and today, it is an annual fixture on Ayia Napa’s summer cultural calendar.

Summer 2017 line-up

This year’s event runs for 10 weeks, offering a mix of artists and DJs, kicked off by David, who is a particular favourite, having successfully taken his career full circle.

David started out as a DJ on the UK club circuit, before becoming a platinum recording artist during the late nineties and 2000s, with over 15 million sales worldwide. He then returned to DJing, taking his sell-out TS5 live sets around the world.

The sets were named after David’s Miami penthouse home, Tower Suite 5, where he hosted his first TS5 set.

Costaki says that the number of festival attendees varies depending on the artist, but that numbers have reached 5,000. The process of ensuring that the right artists are selected is one that is ongoing.

“Music is constantly changing, and it takes a lot of hard work and research to stay ahead of the game and current, especially as the festivals are planned quite early in advance.”

Equally a coup for BCL is Chase & Status, MC Rage, Sigala and Jax Jones.

English electronic music production duo, Chase & Status, have released three studio albums, as well as collaborating with major artists worldwide, and are set to release their new album.

As a live band, they also perform with MC Rage and Andy Gangadeen, and will be joined by German-born, American hardcore producer and MC, MC Rage, in Ayia Napa.

English DJ, record producer and remixer, Sigala, is best known for his debut single ‘Easy Love’, which reached number one on the UK Singles Chart in September 2015, whilst English DJ, record producer, singer, songwriter and remixer, Jax Jones, featured on Duke Dumont’s 2014 number one single ‘I Got U’.

All the events are hosted by Mani Liqweed and take place on Makronissos Beach from 7pm. Aside from the beach sets, BCL also holds weekly glow paint parties, DJ sets at various clubs of the resort, and a fantasy boat trip.
